After years of furniture making, a diploma in graphic design, and a
degree in product design at Ravensbourne, I finally found a media which
really excited and challenged my imagination: broken ceramic tiles! But
not the cutting slivers you find on building sites, nor the sharp edges
of ceramic squares in mosaics. These ceramic tiles are found on the Italian
beaches. Tiles which once graced houses of differing Italian cultures
and periods, seemingly of no more use were carelessly discarded into the
beautiful Mediterranean Sea .
Through years of erosion by the sea their edges become rounded and smooth,
creating unique shapes with a myriad of designs fired into them still
clearly visible. Impossible to reproduce.
Some of the works I have added a description of what I see, as there
subtleties which I would not like the viewer to miss.
All pictures are ready for hanging by means of a cord set into the plaster
and are striking enough without a frame. However, with some, a greater
emphasis can be made with a large coloured border and frame, which would
need to be expertly mounted in a unique way to support the weight of the
tablet.
Here are just a few of the diverse subjects I have completed.
