LATA VISWANATHAN

GROWING UP....
Born in India, in 1973 in the state of West Bengal, Kolkatta,I spent my early childhood in the 'City of Joy' as it is more popularly known today followed by the latter half of my formative years in Libya in Africa and Bangalore city, down South on the Indian map .

TUNING IN WITH THE ARTS...

After completing my high school I, opted to pursue a degree in 'The History of Fine Arts and drawing & painting' from ''Stella Maris'' a popular university in Chennai in the state of TamilNadu .I suppose, I opted for the arts as I, always had this inner urge to be involved in something creative and different .

Being surrounded by a family of engineers and doctors ( a very common trend then... )in the South, a degree in a varied field seemed like an absolute welcome break.!! Luckily for me, my family was supportive of my decision. Fine Arts opened my eyes to many things-Colors,textures,perspective,forms&spaces ...my overall sense of aesthetics was a lot more defined by the end of the college term .Of course at that point, my exposure to art was limited to assignments and art exhibits within the campus .

THE SWITCH...
After college, I opted to switch careers owing to limitations in the art field at that point and started training in the apparel industry wherein I handled a different portfolio .Though it was good while it lasted a lot of introspection brought me back to the arts and I have been reliving the experience ever since.

ART TO ME...
Art is a very personal thought process, and does not always mean the same to every individual. There are no set boundaries here ,no matter what the art form is .In the painting context , it is an amalgamation of thoughts and feelings, at a given point in time .The beauty of it lies in the fact that these invisible thoughts can be captured on paper or canvas with a single stroke of a brush or pen or any other medium lending a whole new dimension to an otherwise void space. Art is all about perceptions, perhaps even a unique lingo shared between the viewer and the art form. The ability to express oneself and also rope in varied opinions and perceptions is probably what makes this entire journey more enriching and fulfiling.

COLOR PALETTE, MEDIUMS, SUBJECT MATTER...
My most preferred colour palette would be the 'earth colors'.I think they have a magical power to impart a lot of depth to a painting and for that matter any other art form, especially the 3d one's( which I hope to learn and may be master someday!!)However, what I, employ in my works is a mixed palette of earth colors as well as both warm and cool colors.I do have a weakness though, for the analogous colors especially the purply blues and purply reds.
My preferred medium at this stage would have to be acrylics as it is probably the most versatile and sought after medium. I have largely utilized acrylics and pastes in my works ,though during my early days the concentration was more on oils and postercolors. I, have also done a bit of experimenting with glass colors which did bear some good results .
Though my favourite subject matter is working on facials and figuratives , I feel I am turning more experimental and would take on other subject matters as well and see where my journey takes me ........
My inspiration stems from various sources and in combination with my imagination and other techniques I tend to portray my subject matter in a particular setting .I, normally do not believe in any fixed explanatory views as far as my works go.What is stated is purely from a personal view point .Like I have said before perceptions vary and everyone is entitled to one. So ....let your imagination roll and take you through the journey...Happy viewing!!!
