Artists Comments: This cherry tree no longer exists. It used to
grow in the garden of our house on the hill overlooking the post of Kobe.
It was the same age as the house: 120 years old. We lived in that house
for many years and the neighbours used to complain that although the cherry
blossom was beautiful, it was the cause of pollution when the petals fell
because it was a very big tree and its branches reached into several gardens.
Furthermore, the tree housed many unwanted insects and in autumn they
had to put up with falling leaves, not to mention twigs and branches torn
off during typhoons; it was a saga in its own right, with neighburhood
petitions to get rid of the tree. I am happy to say that we managed to
resist all calls for cutting it down as long as we lived there, but soon
after we left, sadly it met its demise.
