Artists Comments: Tsuruga is a Japan-Sea port north of Kyoto.
Tsuruga Bay is a narrow inlet sheltered by mountains to the east and west.
The timber ships moor out in the bay, where they unload their cargo, rather
than in port. Pine trees are a prominent feature of the area and most
views are seen through the branches of pines. Tsuruga is only one of the
many coastal areas in Japan where pine trees grow in profusion; many are
very old and as they compete with each other for their share of the available
sunlight, they assume some wonderful shapes.
