Artists Comments: Awaji is famous for the many ponds which dot the countryside. Wherever you go you will find ponds of different shapes and sizes. They are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and dragon flies. I have never seen so many dragon flies as in this area; there are many kinds both large and small, mainly black, blue, yellow and red, this latter appearing in the autumn. They all have one thing in common; they are very aggressive and they eat mosquitoes, so they are very useful!
