Artists Comments: Semi-abstract inspired by views from the train
on my trip across Russia(or The Soviet Union as it was then called)on
the Trans Siberian Railway in September 1968. I painted and drew many
pictures of my impressions and I have only a few left. Siberia was a mixture
of the extreme beauty of silver birch trees and pristine views untouched
by humans on the one hand, and factories belching smoke on ther other.
This particular work could be called a nightmare, excpet that I didn’t
view it that way because I was looking at it all from another world; we
passerngers on the train were in a world of our own and not involved in
the everyday health problems that must have arisen because of the pollution.
