Artists Comments: The inspiration for this picture comes from
Darwin’s ‘Natural Selection’. When we are surrounded
by nature, we can well understand the validity of Darwin’s theory
of Natual Selection and realise that it is a fact rather than a theory,
because we witness it everywhere we go. Herbert Spencer, the English philosopher,
coined the phrase “Survival of the Fittest” and in the natural
world, without the interference of humans, it is a very apt expression.
Plants which grow quickly enough or strongly enough will rise abnove the
other plants such as weeds and dense undergrowth, but the weaker ones
will be smothered and die.
