Artists Comments: A view of the Naruto Bridge through the pine trees. Pine trees are everywhere along the coasts of Japan and in many places there are large pine forests leading to sandy beaches; pines thrive in sandy soils. This picture has both red and black pines. Black pines are called ‘kuromatsu’, where ‘kuro’ means black. Some black pines are very, very old and they assume a variety of interesting shapes.
