Artists Comments: This is the bridge which connects Awaji Island to the island of Shikoku(see Awaji map). it is a famous tourist spot in Japan because it is situated at the confluence of two seas; the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, which have different tidal fluctuations, resulting in an enormous vortex directly under the bridge. The ship in this picture used to be a training ship for naval cadets, but it is now motorised and takes passengers to view the vortex every day from the port of Fukura. There are two ships in all, both old sailing ships, now motorised. The other ship is white.
